About The Spa Room

spa room studio

The Spa Room is a simple, cozy space for restoration and wellness in a bustling city. Conveniently located in the vibrant Tenleytown neighorhood of Washington, DC, The Spa Room is housed within a peaceful second floor office suite. The waiting area is shared with psychotherapists and other healing professionals.

Focus and Intention

The Spa Room  is an  innovative  one room spa concept that draws upon the authentic essence of spa. A simple, nurturing and peaceful healing environment within four walls.

The Spa Room  massage based treatment menu offers the opportunity to combine specific therapeutic techniques with sensorial experiences for a customized session.

Steamed towels, fragrant oils, cool compresses, hot stones and skin nourishing serums enhance the massage experience by appealing to all five senses.

A session may include movement education and a hydrating body wrap or a deep tissue massage combined with fragrant sage hot stones for a feeling of warmth on a cold day.

Meet the Professionals

Mary Szegda, MA
Specializing in Body Based Psychotherapy &
Spa Room Founder, Licensed Counselor, Yoga Teacher , Mindfulness Instructor
mary@sparoommassage.com

I’ve enjoyed many years of working and training in the field of mind-body studies. These days I’m happily integrating my experience as a dance movement therapist, professional counselor and yoga teacher at The Spa Room. This work is informed by a MA in applied psychology, intensive study of rehabilitation counseling,  certification as an Infant Massage Instructor, intensive study of drama therapy , teaching creative movement in Montessori schools and supporting people with brain injuries in their rehabilitation. I’ve been practice massage therapy since 2003.  I’m also a practitioner of the John Barnes Method of Myofascial Release at the intermediate level and am continuing to advance my skills in the fields of dissociation & PTSD through enrollment in the level 1 sensori- motor psychotherapy training.

My goal is to create a healing community based on the concepts of simplicity, authenticity and self-expression. There are so many ways to find happiness and learn about ourselves. The Spa Room is a place where artists, yogis and healers can advance their skills, try out new projects and practice their art forms in a supportive environment. It is also meant to be a place where people from all walks of life can come to experience the original intention of spa- healing through connection to nature, physical body and community.

While some people experience temporary symptom relief from deep tissue massage, there is a growing body of research to suggest that methods  which address the nervous system and the fascia in combination with mindfulness skills have a more powerful and lasting healing effect. I work best with clients who are open to being active participants in their own healing journey. I also believe strongly that each human has within them everything that they need to heal themselves, and my role is to assist you in discovering your best self.  While I do still accept clients for relaxation and general therapeutic massage, each session includes an intake, education, and clinical discussion.

I offer the following service at The Spa Room.

  • Massage 101- Private Massage Instruction
  • Infant Massage Instruction
  • Myofascial Release
  • Mindfulness Sessions for Anxiety, Depression & Stress Reduction
  • Myofascial Release for Lactation
  • Integrated Reiki & Swedish Massage Sessions
  • Mindfulness Instruction
  • Private Yoga Sessions for Self-Awareness & Stress Reduction
  • Therapeutic Massage Sessions -Combination of Manual Therapy/Myofascial Release
  • Private Movement Sessions (Authentic Movement & Dance Therapy Based)
  • Ayurvedic Bodywork
  • 30 Min. Complimentary Wellness Consultations

When I’m not in the massage room, I enjoy choreographing and performing post-modern dance.

A Note from Mary-

Thank you for your interest in The Spa Room.  We are a boutique wellness practice located in the heart of Tenleytown.  I began The Spa Room in March of 2010- with a mission to create a place where people could feel confident about the professionalism and quality of their treatments, yet feel comfortable and at home.

The word spa was originally meant to describe a destination where people could come to connect and be nourished by their natural environment.  Spa was associated with the concept of coming together in community to participate in healing practices. Our goal was to re-create that original intention of “spa” as retreat within the confines of our wonderful, but often too busy city.

The Spa Room is guided by three principles: simplicity, authenticity and self-expression.

Our unique services range from  Wellness Consultations to Somatic Methods such as The Feldenkrais Method, to Relaxation 101- a workshop designed to promote self-care habits in your daily life.

The Spa Room also offers therapeutic massage along with our signature spa- enhancement menu so that your bodywork experience may be equally therapeutic and indulgent.

It has been very exciting to see The Spa Room community grow and to see our clients feel so relaxed and happy.

Thank you for stopping by our website, we look forward to meeting you soon,

In health and happiness,

Mary
