Writing the Body: Poetry Writing Prompt Workshop

In this monthly workshop, we will write in response to prompts. The prompts will begin with our bodies (muscles, five senses, physical memories) and may bring us anywhere. As we can slowly stretch our body to allow an opening, we will focus on our physical experiences and related memories in order to understand them better. Writing, which includes naming our experiences, is part of how we understand and navigate our world.

While there are certain parts of our body that respond very easily to bodywork (tight shoulders or aching low back) there are discomforts that seem almost impossible because they are located in areas that seem our of our control. Two such areas are the jaw and the pelvic floor. Both the pelvic floor and the jaw are areas that reflect postural imbalances throughout the body and are reflect our habits of storing stress. Because our discomforts arise from a combination of movement and emotional habits, the best intervention is a holistic one. These individual awareness through movement sessions will give you the tools to help you feel better.
